Title: Web Coordinator

As an organization, OpenMedia is at a crucial point in its development. With the game-changing success of the last two years, we’re seeking the right person to help us move at the speed of the Internet—both quickly and strategically—to engage website visitors with sophisticated online tools. We believe that organizations are rewarded when they respond rapidly; for us this often means making fast changes to our websites, and quickly building new tools to seize time-bound opportunities.

Position Description

Are you someone with a passion for the open Internet and Internet freedom issues?

The Web Coordinator will work with our Web Manager, Communications Manager, our Executive Director, and volunteer developers to develop and deploy online tools, to maintain and improve OpenMedia’s online presence, and to liaise with hosts.

The Web Coordinator is responsible for Drupal development projects, and helping to maximize the effectiveness of our digital environments in order to engage our supporters in safeguarding the open and affordable Internet. We’re looking for a candidate at the beginning of their career, who is interested in building a strong portfolio of skills and saving the open Internet, all at the same time.

Duties:

  • Managing and executing web development projects, including the development of campaign pages and petitions (see some recent work here and here)
  • Looking holistically at OpenMedia’s online presence and developing strategies to maximize its effectiveness
  • Being our liaison to the developer world and activating our community of talented volunteers
  • Website testing, bug fixing, and optimization, including admin-level Drupal support
  • Assisting with CRM and payment processor management (Salsa, Salesforce, Paypal, IATS), email management, liaising with server hosts, and general management of our IT infrastructure and resources
  • Providing effort estimates; communicating the progress of projects

Qualifications:

  • Experience with Drupal 6 and 7, including:
  • A solid understanding of the framework
  • Existing theming skills and an interest in working toward mastery in this area.
  • Design and implementation of modules, especially those relating to Webform and Drupal FAPI
  • General site maintenance
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced working environment as part of a team or alone; ability to respond rapidly to technical issues, where applicable
  • Experience with jQuery/Javascript and AJAX techniques
  • Aptitude for online campaigning and understanding of the requirements of a networked not-for-profit
  • Must have own laptop and software licenses

Assets:

  • Experience custom coding in Drupal or other CMSes
  • Experience with web development collaboration and volunteer management
  • Experience with responsive design/development for mobile
  • Experience with MySQL database development
  • Fluent in HTML5 and CSS3
  • Experience with cross-site integration using JSON/JSONP and XML
  • Understanding of the LAMP technology stack
  • General understanding of best practices for web-based architecture and design
  • Experience with web infrastructure management

Online Video Editor Internship

We are seeking applicants for the position of Online Video Editor for a term of at least 3 months, approximately 5-10 hours per week, unpaid, and working from our office in Vancouver.

Description

The Online Video Editor works with the Executive Director and the Communications Manager to engage with the pro-Internet community using online video. This individual is very creative, and makes innovative use of video as a tool for citizen education and community development. Duties for this position will include the following:

Duties:

  • Film & edit Weekly News Update videos
  • Capture OpenMedia.ca’s broadcast news coverage so that we can present it to the pro-Internet community
  • Come up with creative and engaging ways to describe OpenMedia.ca’s work using online video, and follow through on their development
  • Assist volunteer video producers in gathering and editing footage

Requirements:

  • Familiarity with the work of OpenMedia.ca
  • Access to a wireless enabled laptop and video-editing software
  • Familiar with iMovie, Final Cut Pro, or related software, and a good sense of video aesthetics

Assets:

  • Experience creating or following an online video strategy
  • Understanding of search engine optimization for video
  • Experience editing audio files
  • Experience with Adobe CS (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) or related graphic design software
  • Experience with Drupal, or another online content management system like WordPress or Joomla
  • Avid user of social media tools like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Flickr
  • Flexible schedule

OpenMedia.ca is seeking passionate, dedicated, and reliable applicants for the position of Team Leader of the new OpenMedia.ca Street Teams (OMSTs). This position is unpaid and requires approximately 5-10 hours/week commitment. The OpenMedia.ca Street Team program will aim to raise awareness about digital policy issues affecting Canadians and spread information related to Internet openness and open media practices through ground level events and initiatives.

Position Description

With the help and guidance of the OpenMedia.ca Outreach Coordinators, Team Leaders will be responsible for organizing and managing a team of individuals working towards brainstorming ideas, running community events, and completing overarching action items. Team Leaders will also be responsible for communicating directly with OpenMedia.ca staff and collecting/relaying feedback and data from team initiatives. Responsibilities will include:

  • Organizing monthly Street Team meetings
  • Setting achievable goals for and delegating tasks to their Street Team
  • Developing relationships with local decision-makers and monitoring their activities related to OpenMedia.ca
  • Reporting back regularly to OpenMedia.ca staff regarding Street Team progress

Requirements:

  • Community involvement or experience working with community groups
  • Avid user of social media tools including Facebook, Google +, YouTube, and Twitter
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills

OpenMedia.ca is seeking passionate, dedicated and reliable individuals for the position of Team Member of the new OpenMedia.ca Street Teams (OMSTs). The OpenMedia.ca Street Team program will aim to raise awareness about digital policy issues affecting Canadians and spread information related to Internet openness and open media practices through ground level events and initiatives.

Position Description

With the help and guidance of Team Leaders, Team Members will be responsible for working as a team to brainstorm, organize, and execute events/initiatives within their local communities. Team Members will be responsible for attending regular team meetings and utilizing various promotional avenues to distribute OpenMedia.ca materials and educate citizens on the importance of an open and free Canadian media space. Responsibilities will include:

  • Attending monthly Street Team meetings
  • Brainstorming and helping to organize local events
  • Promoting OpenMedia.ca and Street Team materials via social media
  • Engaging and informing local communities and personal networks about Openmedia.ca events/initiatives (including local policymakers)
