CBC & Radio-Canada to experience funding cuts

The CBC and Radio-Canada both are expecting to see a cut in funds by $12.6 million. In total, the CBC is expected to lose $8.9 million and Radio-Canada, $3.7 million.

Due to this funding loss, the CBC is warning that it might have to cut down on some prime-time TV shows; these funds were apparently supposed to finance independent television productions. Read more »

CanCon Regulations don't belong on the Internet

A Commons committee is on the verge of producing a new media study. The committee consists of MPs who apparently admit to not knowing much about YouTube. They invited Google Inc. to comment on enforcing Canadian Content regulations online. Google stated that Canadian Content regulations do not belong online.

“This is a very important study,” said Mr. Del Mastro, 39, the parliamentary secretary to Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore. “I think Parliament has got to catch up with where this economy is.”

TV shows in a different form, different medium

According to 839 Canadians in the Interactive Reid Report, citizens are spending over 18 hours a week on the net.

Canadians are watching more television online now. The cost of cable is rising therefore people are going to the Internet for their entertainment needs. Mark Laver, the associate vice president of Ipsos Reid, said, "We're watching television in a different form in a different medium. Some of that increase in Internet usage is coming from people watching shows online." Read more »

CRTC to make new Canadian Television Policy

OurTV wrote an article discussing the 2009 Financial Results of Conventional Television Stations by the CRTC. The report points out that private broadcasters are spending $846.3 million on foreign programming (59%); spending on Canadian programming has decreased by 3.3%. Furthermore, less money has gone into Canadian drama. Read more »

Google and Intel are teaming up with Sony and planning to create Google TV, which will bring the Internet into your living room. People will be able to use this through new television sets and set-top boxes. Read more »
