Gamers See No CRTC Enforcement After One Month
The CRTC has still yet to put forth any indication of what enforcement measures it will apply against Rogers, after the CRTC found Rogers to be in violation of net neutrality policy on October 27th, 2011. In a follow up e-mail by the Canadian Gamers Organization to the CRTC last week, the CRTC responded stating:
“We also note that you are awaiting a decision from the CRTC Compliance and Enforcement Sector regarding Rogers's Internet traffic management practices. As the comment period is closed and the file is still active, we cannot provide any comment on this issue at this time, such as timeframe, enforcement actions, etc. I can however direct you to Telecom Information Bulletin CRTC 2011-609: http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2011/2011-609.htm, and when there is a status change in the file, you will be notified accordingly.”
The delay on enforcement could also be due to the amount of complaints the CRTC has received from consumers on the issue of throttling games and other applications. It could also mean that the CRTC is getting ready to put Rogers on its quarterly list of naughty ISPs, but this is pure speculation at this point. One thing is for certain though; it doesn’t seem that the enforcement division at the CRTC is a very an open process thus far.
In the mean time, I would encourage readers to sign our petition to ensure that the CRTC will put forth active measures to ensure Rogers stops throttling games and application. Even though this case is with the CRTC, we could very much expect closed door meetings with Rogers and the CRTC. It’s important that the CRTC acts on behalf of consumers. Our petition is located here: http://openmedia.ca/gamers
Also another development to this case as well. Rogers issued a disconnection notice on my personal account in October (which since has been reversed) I have been using for this CRTC complaint. The matter is currently being investigated by The Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services (CCTS). I will keep everyone up to date when the CRTC and the CCTS get back to me.
